Course Details

Machine embroidery for beginners - four week course Come and join me on this comprehensive course to learn how to “drop your feed dogs” and get to grips with machine or “free motion” embroidery. Suitable for complete beginners, or those who wish to brush up on their skills, we will be first be going back to basics and then building our skills week by week, with a range of fun little projects. The first week will be spent learning how to set up your machine and fabric, with guidance on the best practices for machine embroidery. Discover which stitches you can use and build your confidence with a variety of easy patterns and shapes, as you get used to the wonderful feel of "drawing with thread" and having control of where you move your fabric. On week two, we'll build up layers of fabric to make a simple, yet very effective, landscape and I'll show you easy stitching methods to create trees or flowers. Week three will look at some basic quilting techniques - using wadding, to create depth and decoration on patterned fabric. Then we'll practice a fun appliqué technique - adding on pieces of fabric and cutting them back with fantastic effect. Discover how you can "trap" small pieces of organza to make beautiful and unusual backgrounds. Finally, I'll introduce you to the joy of dissolvable fabric! This washes away to create some amazing effects and is such a fun thing to use. Learn how to make an unusual little bowl to complete your course. Week by week, we will build upon your skills, to give you a comprehensive overview of the great things you can do with machine embroidery. The small, friendly group size means plenty of one to one help and demonstrations and the opportunity for lots of questions and feedback. You will need to bring along your own sewing machine with embroidery foot, but all materials are included, plus tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits!
